What is Uterine Cancer?

Uterine cancer is a form of uncontrollable growth of cancerous cells that originates from the tissues of the uterus. Also known as womb cancer, it’s often associated with many different types of cancer, namely cervical cancer and endometrial cancer.

The exact cause of uterine cancer is not known, though doctors label hormone imbalance as a major factor to bring this disease. If this cancer is detected at early stage itself, then surgical or medical procedures can help cure it.

Among the types of cancer, uterine cancer is placed at tenth spot for causing maximum death of women. In fact, developed countries are more likely to be at risk with this disease.

What are the types of Uterine Cancer?

There are different types of uterine cancer that can hit patients. Let’s have a look at them:-

Endometrial cancer – This form is broadly categorized further in 3 sub-categories, including Endometrial Carcinomas, Endometrial Stromal Sarcomas and Malignant Mixed Müllerian Tumors. Cervical cancer – It developes from the lower part of the uterus Uterine sarcomas – It originates from the muscular layer of the uterus Gestational trophoblastic disease – Starts from tissue in the uterus.

Women with uterine cancer show some symptoms, however they may be experience any signs in the early stages. Similarly, these symptoms are not a certainty of the disease having hit the patient. Let’s look at some of those symptoms:-

Most of cancer types follow a similar type of treatment plans, with a slight variation according to the stage of the cells. The treatment of uterine cancer also follows the standard norm where a combination of surgery, radio therapy and chemo is used.

Surgery is performed to take out the parts where the cancerous cells are growing, like uterus, ovaries, and fallopian tubes. In some cases, surgical procedure is done to remove lymph nodes. Similarly, cancer cells are killed with radiation therapy treatment.

In most of cases in advanced stage, chemotherapy is done to kill cancer cells. More so, cancer growth is blocked with the help of progestin hormone therapy.
